Account of Louise Nevelson, American Sculptor Louise Nevelson was an American stone worker most popular for her grand monochromatic three-dimensional framework developments. Before an incredible finish, she was met with much basic approval. She is recalled through numerous perpetual open workmanship establishments all through the U.S., including New York City’s Louise Nevelson Plaza on Maiden Lane in the Financial District and Philadelphias Bicentennial Dawn, made in 1976 out of appreciation for the bicentennial of the marking of the Declaration of Independence. Quick Facts: Louise Nevelson Occupation: Artist and sculptorBorn: September 23, 1899 in present-day Kiev, UkraineDied: April 17, 1988 in New York City, New YorkEducation: Art Students League of New YorkKnown For: Monumental sculptural works and open workmanship establishments Early Life Louise Nevelson was conceived Louise Berliawsky in 1899 in Kiev, at that point some portion of Russia. In spite of the fact that she was just four at that point, Nevelson’s conviction that she was to be a craftsman was available at an amazingly youthful age, a fantasy from which she never wandered. Louise and her family settled in Rockland, Maine, where her dad turned into a fruitful contractual worker. Her father’s occupation made it simple for a youthful Louise to communicate with material, getting bits of wood and metal from her father’s workshop and utilizing it to develop little figures. Despite the fact that she started her vocation as a painter and fiddled with etchings, she would come back to form in her develop work, and it is for these models that she is most popular. Though her dad was known around Rockland because of his expert exercises, Nevelson’s mother segregated herself, infrequently associating with her individual neighbors. (Hoffman would himself in the long run move to the United States and show an age of American painters, maybe the most powerful craftsmanship instructor of the 1950s and 60s. Nevelson’s early acknowledgment of his significance just fortifies her vision as a craftsman.) <img information srcset=https://www.thoughtco.com/thmb/LYxELNWibRrHeq4KHKwF5xV-Yoc=/300x0/filters:no_upscale():max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/GettyImages-3133420-5b896606c9e77c005717e12c.jpg 300w, https://www.thoughtco.com/thmb/njLUcD3rrvWx5BbbeMMo__CxJWc=/1407x0/filters:no_upscale():max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/GettyImages-3133420-5b896606c9e77c005717e12c.jpg 1407w, https://www.thoughtco.com/thmb/ol8fNLbRVT8jtOSvRHqJ4wAgoKo=/2514x0/filters:no_upscale():max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/GettyImages-3133420-5b896606c9e77c005717e12c.jpg 2514w, https://www.thoughtco.com/thmb/GCfN4s45Yyetarczr_DOiBgFwbg=/4728x0/filters:no_upscale():max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/GettyImages-3133420-5b896606c9e77c005717e12c.jpg 4728w information src=https://www.thoughtco.com/thmb/Ykyi89g3xBNC8NvfjxKeYVaQhyo=/4728x3594/filters:no_upscale():max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/GettyImages-3133420-5b896606c9e77c005717e12c.jpg src=//:0 alt=Louise Nevelson with her work during the 1950s class=lazyload information click-tracked=true information img-lightbox=true information expand=300 id=mntl-sc-square image_1-0-17 information following container=true /> Louise Nevelson with her work during the 1950s.  Getty Images In the wake of following Hoffman to New York, Nevelson in the end worked under the Mexican painter Diego Rivera as a muralist. Ethical Reasoning to Determine the Course of Action

Moral Reasoning to Determine the Course of Action Creating programming that controls the autopilot framework on a model of a business plane is strongly recommendable for wellbeing reasons. Testing the framework appropriately is similarly basic. Hustling up the testing to meet the freely reported testing cutoff time may prompt trading off the unwavering quality and wellbeing of the whole airplane system.Advertising We will compose a custom article test on Ethical Reasoning to Determine the Course of Action explicitly for you for just $16.05 $11/page Learn More Various hypotheses suggest various techniques for dealing with the good dilemma. The administrators, voyagers and expert bodies reserve the option to acquire reliable data about the security framework introduced in the airplane. Bodies, for example, the Global Agenda Council on Space Security and Department of Defense Space Management have lawful and moral duties regarding guaranteeing space wellbeing. An architect additionally has the duty to display an autopilot that gets i nformation from the Global Positioning System programming introduced in the airplane. The GPS recipient ought to have the option to figure the aircraft’s position in space. Furnished with such situating data gadgets, an autopilot helps keep the plane straight. Additionally, it helps effectively execute the flight plans. Playing out the correct errand is fundamental. It would be ethically testing to conclude whether to execute the widespread expert requests or those of the chief or not. There are two elective activities for understanding the difficulty. The primary conceivable activity is executing the demands. The other alternative is questioning actualize them. Questioning actualize the amateurish requests is the best game-plan to take since it would ensure the wellbeing of those ready. The choice to question the requests complies with the guidelines of Kantianism hypothesis. The hypothesis expresses that what an individual wants to achieve and what he/she ought to achieve ar e regularly contrary. This implies an individual may settle on choices that outcome to quick uneasiness and despondency. Be that as it may, the choice ought to eventually prompt fulfillment. The whole reason of ethical quality is going in the correct direction only for it. The manager’s energy about the aim to test the airplane suitably ought to have no effect on the choice to turn down his/her solicitation. The brief sentiment of disappointment ought not likewise affect the choice made. Along these lines, I would take the choice to follow the right guidelines and techniques and spare existences of individuals and the aircraft. Certain gatherings of individuals may differ with the choice. This might be because of their failure to decide autonomously what is either off-base or right.Advertising Looking for paper on morals? We should check whether we can support you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Kant expresses that an individual decides his/her conduct by util izing the law of independence. Thusly, a choice is either off-base or right contingent upon the expectation of the activity. What's more, ethical quality is rarely relative. An individual is either ethically upstanding or not. This happens on the grounds that ethical quality isn't controlled by the result of the choice however by the expectation of the activity. Since it is unfeasible to foresee precisely the outcomes of human activities, I would receive the Kantianism hypothesis so as to spare the circumstance. This implies the undertaking is cultivated expertly. The activity would guarantee that the partners acquire no misfortunes. Notwithstanding, in the event that they cause misfortunes because of the choice, I would stay placated that the aim was non-malevolent and the results were outside my ability to control. Then again, one would want to act dependent on the hypothesis of Consequentialism. The exactness of this hypothesis is controlled by two moral standards. The main rule expresses that the outcomes of a demonstration build up whether an activity is ethically right or not. The other guideline avows that the level of predominance of the outcomes decides the scale for estimating the profound quality of the activity. The issue with this hypothesis is that it is hard to precisely foresee the result of an activity. An individual who receives this hypothesis can decide to conform to the requests of the chief and keep subtleties of their activity mystery. They may consent to amateurish demands and expectation that no abhorrent would occur for the partners. Another gathering of individuals may want to embrace the hypothesis of Virtue Ethics. The speculation deemphasizes rules, outcomes, and specific acts. It enormously centers around the character of the entertainer. The significant factor, as per this theory, is whether the individual who is acting is articulating superb character or not. Thusly, a demonstration is viewed as right when playing out this demo nstration, the individual activities, exhibits or develops a morally righteous character. Any one experiencing through comparative difficulties can depend on the hypothesis, assess the ethical character of the chief, and conform to the requests, especially in the event that he/she is persuaded that the manager is ethically upstanding. Definitively, the correct choice ought not be founded on general suspicions. The character of the supervisor has no immediate effect on the results of the choice. Likewise, the hypothesis of Consequentialism might be immaterial since results of choices are affected by a heap of variables. A portion of the variables are outside human ability to control. I, hence, favor the Kantianism hypothesis since it requires a person to assume responsibility for his/her decisions.Advertising We will compose a custom paper test on Ethical Reasoning to Determine the Course of Action explicitly for you for just $16.05 $11/page Learn More

Inclusion Of Students With Disability In General School - 2200 Words

Inclusion Of Students With Disability In General School (Essay Sample) Content: Inclusion of Students with Disability in General SchoolName:Class:IntroductionOver the past two decades, a number of federal laws have caused an increase in the provision of education opportunities that were inaccessible to students with disabilities. However, the debate on inclusion, what it is, to what extent it should be administered in schools, has risen in the recent past. Inclusion is in response to the equity concerns that arise with regard to the education of students with disability. Inclusion has been defined in a number of ways but this research will adopt the definition given by (Dudley-Marling and Burns, 2014) inclusion follows a legal requirement that students with special need are educated Least Restrictive Environment (LRE). The rationale for educating students with disability especially under the Least Restrictive Environment as outlined in IDEA Act, and it aims to promote inclusion in education (Dudley- Marling and Burns, 2014).In a world that has wi tnessed positive development of many institutions and sectors, the subject of education and inclusion has not been tackled in the magnitude it deserves, to ensure that guidelines outlined in legislation concerning students with disability are achieved. This is because students with special needs are still facing education exclusion and discrimination owing to the nature of their condition. Even though the number of students with disability included in the general instruction classroom has increased, a number of students with severe disabilities are yet to participate in inclusion programs.A movement in the 1970s by parents, civil society and other interested parties led to passing of the Education for All Handicapped Children (Keeffe-Martin, 2001). In 2008 the law was re-enacted to become Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). The law requires that district schools provide public education for students with special needs (Keffee-Martin, 2001). It also gives a provision for a least restrictive environment for students with disabilities in schools. The movements in the past decade, has seen many changes being initiated towards inclusion of students with disability from segregated institution to general classroom. The issues encompassing inclusion continue to be a motivating factor for intensive research to try and shed more light on this concept. The main objective of inclusion is to someday eliminate the distinction that exists between regular education and special education. This is what the IDEA act facilitates by mandating district schools to provide resources appropriate to advance the education curriculum for students with disability (Spencer, Evmenova , Boon and Hayes-Harris. (2014).Inclusion of students with disability in general schools is an issue because just like other students, students with disabilities should benefit from the same school experience. Inclusion is a right that should be enjoyed by all students because separation of a student because of their special need is not considered equal. Inclusion provides all students with the same educational opportunities in the same classroom setup. The IDEA requires that disabled students should have their own Individual Education Program. This implies that depending on the level of disability, the student will get a customized IEP Program. The concept of full inclusion brings challenges during implementation because some disabled student may present certain medical conditions that call for separate learning programs. (Antoinette, 2002). Some individuals also feel inclusion; makes it harder for both students with disability and the other students to reach their learning potential because of the classroom adjustments that have to be made to accommodate students with disability.Education instructors have a vital role to play in ensuring the inclusion process is effective. They are currently struggling with the concept of inclusion for a number of reasons, for example inclusion of special needs students may slow the learning speed of the general class, leading to an incomprehensive coverage of the curriculum (Antoinette, 2002).Another trend that makes inclusion a difficult thing to achieve is the perception that inclusion of special needs students can actually lead to a reverse discrimination for the other students (Spencer et al. 2014). Inclusion changes the way in which educators teach their students. Therefore, analyzing the effects of inclusion is paramount to serving the general students and the special needs students in an effective way.In the past, the community placed little significance to the education of students with disabilities in general classrooms. Instead of integration the students with disability were schooled in special education institution specifically for such students. With the advancement in treatment and technology, it become relatively easy to accommodate special needs students in general classroom (Spencer et al. 2014) .LEGISLATIONAn important legislation that takes into account the needs of students with disability is IDEA. It is the primary source that provides information on inclusion requirements for individuals with disability using Least Restrictive Environment concept. IDEA is used to by many individuals to challenge inclusion issues or resolve claims based on discrimination for the disabled (Antoinette, 2002). The IDEA is a state law that was put in place to help different states provide education for special needs students as per the constitution (Dudley- Marling and Burns, 2014). In a situation where the special needs students have limited integration in the general class due to their disruptive condition, then a standard placement cannot provide the right environment for them (Antoinette,2002).The IDEA is a Federal Law that was enacted as an Act in 1990 and become a Law in 2004. It serves to protect the rights of disabled students, so that they access public education regardless of th eir disabilities. The IDEA Act protects students up to the age of 21 (U.S. Department of Health And Human Services .U.S. Department of Education, 2015), and requires schools to provide educational needs for students with disability. The IDEA serves to provide the following: * Ensure that every student with disability receives Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) just like any other student. The IDEA uses the Least Restrictive Environment, to compel schools to provide special education services. * Students who qualify for IDEA are eligible to receive Individualized Education Program (IEP). The IEP outlines the specific education requirement for a student and the services they will require. * The Law also makes for provision for early intervention services to be given to eligible infant and toddlers with disability.Americans with Disability Act (ADA) is another legislation that supports inclusion. ADA prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities (US. Department of H ealth And Human Services .U.S. Department of Education, 2015). The ADA defines disability as a child who has a physical or mental impairment that limits the childs ability to care for himself/herself, perform manual tasks or engage in other major life activity. Children with diagnosis are automatically including in the ADA. Even though it does not support inclusion directly it prohibits discrimination of any form towards students with disability. Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act also ensures for the provision of education rights for students with disabilities. Section 504 provides that no qualified individual with a disability shall, by reason of such disability, be excluded from participation in or be denied the benefits of the services, programs or activities of any entity that receives Federal Financial Fund, or be subjected to discrimination by such entity ((US. Department of Health And Human Services .U.S. Department of Education, 2015).LITIGATIONWith the kind of discrim ination that students with disabilities have faced before introduction of legislation governing student inclusion, court proceedings have provided the much needed help in providing litigation on special education cases.Murdick, Gartin, and Fowler, (2014) have provided a number of litigation cases that have shaped the way in which inclusion is handled in schools. In the case of T.R. v. Kingwood Township (NJ) (3rd Cir.2000). It was ruled that Free Appropriate Education is a meaningful benefit under the Least Restrictive Environment. The Board of Education V. Rowley, 458 U.S. 176 (1982) the Supreme Court ruled that the IDEA calls for provision of education services that are reasonable for each student under FAPE. In Daniel R.R. v. State Board of Education, the case involved a childIn the Daniel R.R the decision also highlighted a situation where the teacher should not spend most of his/her time with a special need student and limited adjustments made to the curriculum to incorporate special needs students should not go beyond necessary. The two issues are some of the constraints in inclusion of special needs students.Daniel was then allowed to integrate with non-disabled peers over lunch time but undertake his classes in a special education class. The courts task was to determine whether the school district had followed the FAPE guidelines in providing the Least Restrictive Environment for Daniel (Murdick, et al.,2014). The decision made was in favor of the State Board of EducationKatherine G. by Cythia G. v. Kentfield School District (2003)....

Edgar Allan Poe s The Masque Of The Red Death - 1225 Words

Throughout the history of literature we see an obvious string of religion connecting most works to the core of their beginnings. From creation stories of tribes, to colonial poems, to the twisted mind of Edgar Allan Poe, there is a connection. Poe’s â€Å"The Masque of the Red Death† may not seem to portray the ideas of religion but through close examination, the association will become less cloudy. Poe’s use of symbolism, narrator, word choice, helps readers unmask the idea of religion. Poe’s use of symbolism is very evident throughout the story of â€Å"The Masque of the Red Death†. Much has been made about the meaning of the rooms that fill Prince Prospero’s lavish getaway. One such critique, Brett Zimmerman writes, â€Å"It is difficult to believe that a symbolist such as Poe would refuse to assign significance to the hues in a tale otherwise loaded with symbolic and allegorical suggestiveness† (Zimmerman 60). Many agree that the s even rooms represent the seven stages of human existence. The first, blue, signifying the beginnings of life. Keeping in mind Poe’s Neo-Platonism and Transcendentalism stance, the significance of blue is taken a step further. Not only does blue symbolize the beginning of life, but the idea of immortality is apparent when considering these ideas. â€Å"Perhaps ‘The Masque of the Red Death’ then, is not quite the bleak existential vision we have long thought it to be†, expounds Zimmerman (Zimmerman 70). Khrushchevs Time in Office Essay - 1447 Words

Khrushchevs Time in Office Immediately after World War II, there were serious threats of a war with Russia. Events around the world sparked conflict between the two nations. In each conflict tensions were high and the possibility of nuclear war was present. The American policy of repression was the driving force behind their position in almost all cases. For the Russians, the objective of most of these incidents was to expand their sphere of influence. Spheres of influence were an important concept during the Cold War. Russia fought to spread the idea of Communism to other nations in the East while the United States fought to prevent its spread. However, Beria, who had made many enemies during his bloody term as security chief, was arrested and executed. After the elimination of Beria, the succession struggle became more delicate. Malenkov found a frightening rival in Khrushchev, who was elected as first secretary in September 1953. Of peasant background, Khrushchev had served as head of the Ukrainian party organization during and after World War II, and he was also a member of the Soviet political elite during the late Stalin period. After a poor showing by light industry and agriculture, Malenkov resigned as prime minister in February 1955. Because the new prime minister, Bulganin, had little influence or real power, the leaving of Malenkov made Khrushchev the most important figure within the collective leadership. At the 20th Party Congress, held in February 1956, Khrushchev further advanced his position within the party by disapproving Stalin’s crimes in a dramatic secret speech. He revealed that Stalin had subjectively settled thousands of party members and military leaders, thereby contributing to the initial soviet defeats in World War II. Influenza Antibiotics for Viral Infections

Question: Describe about the Influenza for Antibiotics for Viral Infections. Answer: Part 1.1 The use of antibiotics for viral infections is not good because the antibiotics are used to treat bacterial infections while the viral infections like influenza are treated using antiviral drugs (Keren et al., 2013). The prescription of phenoxymethylpenicillin to the patient was meant to treat other infections which had accompanied the influenza. Such symptoms were the painful joints and the patches on the tonsils. Part 1.2 During an infection, there is an increased flow of blood to various tissues in the body. This is aimed at reducing the loss of blood through the infected are which could have a broken skin leading to hemorrhage. As a result, the flow of blood is directed to other healthy tissues via vasodilation. Tissues with high blood flow are therefore too much oxygenated blood hence the reddening as seen in Peters throat. Part 1.3 The swollen throat in Peter was as a result inflammatory chemicals which make the capillaries to become permeable and leak their contents (Wang and Ye, 2015). Since the capillaries are just one cell layer thick, the inflammatory chemicals can diffuse out of the capillaries. As the plasma proteins leak out, they drain water with them. These mediators of inflammation usually generate their inflammatory effects on the areas where they are released by the cells. References Keren, I., Wu, Y., Inocencio, J., Mulcahy, L. R., Lewis, K. Meaning Of Life Essays (1903 words) - Meaning Of Life, Metaphysics

Meaning Of Life Is there a meaning to life? First, to clear up any misunderstandings in the next few paragraphs you are about to read, I shall explain a few things. I am not talking about the individual people in our lives, that mean so much to us, or individual lives. That is a whole other matter. What I mean by the "meaning of life", is the greater picture. There are people all over the world, doing their own thing, living their own lives, in their own areas. Is there a point to this? The people themselves, benefit from learning and having experiences while they're alive, but then they die, and all they have accomplished, ends. Then the process begins all over again with the next generation. So one purpose for life is established. We are here to reproduce. It has been genetically coded into us, and with little prompting, we continue to produce tiny versions of ourselves. But, is there a POINT to this? Well, I solemnly believe not. Some people say the point of life, is to have fun and make others happy. Righto then. Sure, that's a good thing to do, I don't disagree with that. But in terms of the big picture, what does it exactly accomplish? A person lives their life, has fun, and perhaps has the knack of making lots of other people happy in the process, then that person dies. And so eventually, do all the other people they brought happiness to. And through different generations come people who have the same philosophy....same thing, just happening later in time, with different people. Nothing has been accomplished...So, this obviously cannot be the point of life, unless it's inventor has the same intellect as that of pond scum. I would like to think otherwise, so I am interested in finding another answer. Other people believe that God is the point of life. God gives us a booklet of rules and regulations, for us to be eligible to receive his personal 'attention'. We respect his wishes and act accordingly, as to how we believe he would like us to act. Then, it is thought, he looks after us and takes care of us. I find this theory hard to grasp...God, usually, is seen as this great celestial being, that is far more advanced and powerful than any person here on Earth. He has these 'talents' and powers by simply...not being one of us. So, there's God....Way up there, looking down upon us. Earth must seem like a little ant farm to him. If he's up there, looking down and watching over us, how is it so many horrible things happen in the world? Some of you may say it's because the people that these things happened to, weren't behaving how they should have been, how God would have liked them to. Or that God allows us to make choices, good or bad. Ok, then that would mean to me that God is an unforgiving and unsympathetic, celestial meanie. Why should he watch us create misery, see wars break out, while he remains aloof, superior and more powerful than us? I say that's unfair. Perhaps one reason for him would be, because it's more 'fun' to us be so 'handicapped' in the celestial scheme of things. It provides more entertainment, more adventure, and it's harder. And because it's harder, he knows there will be more rewards for us when we succeed in being "good". Something is obviously amiss with this plan, since we continue to do the same things over and over again through the generations, and centuries. We just do not learn this particular philosophy of his. Perhaps he could have let us work the controls? Do you think God has been GOOD at it? Heck no. Look at the world's history...It hasn't exactly been a bed full of roses. Sure, God tried. But while the footy game was on tv, he forgot to cut some of the thorns off the roses when he was preparing Earth's future. You reckon we could do any worse? I don't think so. Seems to me we'd all have just as much luck, even more so, at running a world, than God would. Even if God really was this powerful, wise, kind and forgiving fellow, why is he running a world? He obviously hasn't succeeded in achieving much. Humanity hasn't made any real accomplishments (I'm not talking technology...I'm talking about discovering anything that would lead us to understanding why we are here at all). What's in

An Introduction to Native American Literature

American literatures embrace the memories of creation stories, the tragic wisdom of native ceremonies, trickster narratives, and the outcome of chance and other occurrences in the most diverse cultures in the world. These distinctive literatures, eminent in both oral performances and in the imagination of written narratives, cannot be discovered in reductive social science translations or altogether understood in the historical constructions of culture in one common name. Vizenor 1) Since the end of the 15th century, the migration of Europeans to America, and their importation of Africans as slaves, has led to centuries of conflict and adjustment between Old and New World societies. Europeans created most of the early written historical record about Native Americans after the colonists immigration to the Americas. 3 Many Native cultures were matrilineal; the people occupied lands for use of the entire community, for hunting or agriculture. Europeans at that time had patriarchal cultures and had developed concepts of individual property rights with respect to land that were extremely different. The differences in cultures between the established Native Americans and immigrant Europeans, as well as shifting alliances among different nations of each culture through the centuries, caused extensive political tension, ethnic violence and social disruption. The Native Americans suffered high fatalities from the contact with infectious Eurasian diseases, to which they had no acquired immunity. Epidemics after European contact caused the greatest loss of life for indigenous populations. In 1830, the U. S. Congress passed the Indian Removal Act, authorizing the government to relocate Native Americans from their homelands within established states to lands west of the Mississippi River, accommodating European-American expansion. Perhaps the most important moment of governmental detribalization came with the passing of the Dawes Act in 1887 which set aside 160 acres for each Indian on the reservation, and opened the â€Å"leftovers† up for settlement. According to the U. S. Bureau of the Census (1894), the Indian wars under the government of the United States have been more than 40 in number. They have cost the lives of about 19,000 white men, women and children, including those killed in individual combats, and the lives of about 30,000 Indians. Native Americans were thus pushed out from their own lands and were forced to live in small reservations assigned by the federal government who claimed that setting the Indians on the course to civilisation best ensured their survival. Tribal customs were then forcibly altered and nomadic tribes became sedentary. All Native Americans felt the impact of the new reservation policies, which sought to isolate and contain Indians to make room for an expanding American nation. At the same time that Native Americans were being excluded from the nation, white Americans began to look to them as the source of a unique national identity and literature, distinct from European traditions. Literature from the period depicting Indian characters was incredibly popular, and many works are still celebrated as classics, including James Fenimore Coopers The Last of the Mohicans (1826), Catharine Maria Sedgwicks Hope Leslie (1827), and Henry Wadsworth Longfellows Song of Hiawatha (1855), to name only a few. These texts employ the trope of the disappearing Indian, which represents the deaths of Indians as natural, similar to the changing of the seasons or the setting of the sun, rather than the result of political exclusion or social discrimination. Thus the disappearance of Indians from the American social landscape was not only depicted within this body of writing but also implicitly approved of. At the same time the government sponsored authors and art programs; the proletarian themes of discovery, regionalism, and tourism were new forms of dominance over Native Americans. Therefore, early Native American authors wrote within a hostile political climate and in response to a dominant literary tradition that sentimentalized and condoned the death of Indians. But they found the means to engage with their detractors by authoring their own accounts of Indians that challenged stereotypical beliefs, demanded equal political rights, and proved that Indians were neither disappearing nor silent. Native American authors have faithfully presented some of these issues of inherent native rights, the duplicities of federal policies, and the burdens of racial identities in their short stories and novels. Wynema by Sophia Alice Callahan published in 1891, was the first novel attributed to a Native American author. Callahan, who was a mixedblood Creek, was aware of tribal issues at the time and therefore devoted most of her novel to native issues. Since then many novels by distinguished Native American authors have been published. One of the most important writers among Native Americans in the 1930’s was D’Arcy McNickle, a member of the Flathead tribe of Montana. His first novel The Surrounded was published in 1936, two years after the Indian Reorganization Act was passed near the end of the Depression in the United States. His novel is the poignant story of a mix-breed family and the tragedy of their exclusion from both the red and the white worlds. Because of cultural misunderstandings, which begin between the Indian mother and Spanish father, suspicion, fear, and finally death take their children. The novel is a history of alienation. Kenneth Lincoln who coined the term Native American Rennaissance pointed out that in the late-1960s and early-1970s, a generation of Native Americans were coming of age who were the first of their tribe to receive a substantial English-language education, particularly outside of standard Indian boarding schools and in universities. Conditions for Native people, while still very harsh, had moved beyond the survival conditions of the early half of the century. The beginnings of a project of historical revisionism, which attempted to document—from a Native perspective—the history of the invasion and colonization of the North American continent had inspired a great deal of public interest in Native cultures. During this time of change, a group of Native writers emerged, both poets and novelists, who in only a few years expanded the Native American literary canon.

Different Color, Different Treatment (Research Paper) Research Paper

Different Color, Different Treatment ( ) - Research Paper Example Many of these spheres are defined by stereotypes. Those stereotypes determine the nature of the space that is inhabited. How someone reacts to the others around them must be understood through the culturally developed stereotypes that define the potential of the experience that someone has in coming into contact with others on the street. The experience of the American street is a place where visceral prejudices come alive. Where in social gatherings prejudices can be dampened, set aside in order to create relationships that cross boundaries and develop into meaningful interactions, when one encounters an unknown person on a street, the only framework in which to define the potential of that experience is through culturally developed ‘types’. The unfortunate consequence of these types is that the nature of some are automatically considered to have a negative connotation. The concept of the young African American male brings forth a sense of fear, the nature of his repres entation in culture being angry and violent. The media represents the young African American male through concepts that have developed through stereotyping that occurs on television, through music videos, and through past prejudices that created the concept of the militant angry young African American youth. ... This, of course, is not limited to the African American male. There are many stereotypes that become prominent in public spaces when encounters are not framed through introductions. Part of the problem is the high level of population condensed into cities in which most of the people have no interconnections to one another. Because the nature of modern life has created smaller and more intimate conditions of community, there are far more strangers in the world than were once part of American life. In addition, with some of the more prominent crime sprees that have happened, including terrorist acts, more people are now considered ‘enemies’ which creates a type of anxiety that ends in a hyper vigilance that performs as a barrier between people. Being open to interactions with strangers leaves one open and vulnerable to ‘dangers’ that are perceived through the many communications that have framed ‘types’ for their ‘inclinations’ toward s creating chaos. Prejudice In 1954, Gordon Allport wrote a seminal book on the nature of prejudice and how it affects human relationships. He states as he begins to define the concept of prejudice that â€Å"No corner of the world is free from group scorn†, which is an appropriate way in looking at the nature of prejudice. Society groups people into categories in order to impose order upon the integration of multiple cultural backgrounds that ends in differences that can be visually seen in ethnic qualities. The way in which language is used to define groups, by suggesting that someone is African American, Native American, or Asian American, suggests that when someone has ethnic markers, this places them in a different social groups. However, it is important

Discuss these abstracts in the context of academic research and recent Essay

Discuss these abstracts in the context of academic research and recent developments in audit regulation and practice - Essay Example ted in the financial statements can be termed to be material if its omission or misrepresentation can have an effect on the decision-making process among the users of these records (Ndreca, 2013, pp 350). In simple definition, materiality in financial accounting is the intolerable misstatements that are embedded in the financial statements with the intention of justifying a non-existent transaction (Dodaro, 2013, pp419). In other words, materiality is the intolerable or unacceptable errors which cannot be ignored because they have a greater effect on the financial information represented in the records (Brannan & Gray, 2005, pp26). These errors are huge hence, when neglected; they may lead to big losses of the firm’s resources. This paper explores the concept of materiality in the financial accounting showing the importance of materiality in auditing process, the main development of the concepts of materiality over time. Materiality can be categorized into two; quantitative materiality and qualitative materiality. Quantitative materiality is the actual financial value that a certain misstatement can cause to the organization. On the other hand, qualitative materiality can be just a mere statement that has either misled certain transaction (Brannan & Gray, 2005, pp41). Accountants and management teams in most cases misstate the financial information to conceal particular information not to be known by the shareholders for their own benefits. Sometimes, certain information may qualify to be material without the intention or knowledge of the accountants and the management (Brannan & Gray, 2005, pp26). Therefore, the auditors have the task of exploring all the financial records and scrutinize them to establish, justify and certify that the information represented in them is quite relevant to the true status of the organization (Dodaro, 2013, pp419). Any deviation should be investigated to establish whet her it can amount to the material or can have an effect on

Fashion in the 1920s Essay -- Fads Dress

Fashion in the 1920's The Roaring Twenties brought many fads and fashion rages. During the 1920's, Americans were given the honor of being called the "best- dressed". Several things contributed to this honor: Affordable pricing, mass production clothing, the birth of the "flapper girl", and rise of fashionable movie stars that Americans wanted to imitate. The style and cut of women's clothing during the 1920's changed drastically. Waistlines dropped dramatically while hemlines rose scandalously. Turned-down hose were no longer black, but beige. Rouged knees, bobbed hair, and figureless figures characterized the "radical flappers". These women violated many of the rules dictating appropriate clothing and behavior for women. The flappers took their look one step further by hiding their...

Cell Phones in School Nuisance or Learning Tool Essay

Cell phones over the past few years have become essential to teens. Attributable to this increase in cellphones teens bring them everywhere including school. Consequently though, students who bring them into school often use them without the teacher’s consent and get distracted. The Canadian Health Care System Essay - 1842 Words

According to an overview of Canadian poll surveying public opinion on their universal health care system, 88% of Canadians reported their value for a strong, national, and publically funded health system (Mendelsohn, 2002). Canada is one of the four nations that provide their populations with access to medical services through their universal health care system of 1984 (Bodenheimer Grumbach, 2008). The Canadian health care system is unique in that it prohibits the private health insurance coverage for the fundamental services that are provided by the Canada Health Act; private insurance can be used as a supplement for services that are either partially covered or not covered under the universal health insurance (Steinbrook, 2006). Conversely, in the American health care system there isn’t a universal health coverage for the nation, but rather four different means of paying for health care which includes patient paying out of pocket for individual payments, individual private insurance, employment-based health insurance, and governmental supporting funding (Bodenheimer Grumbach, 2008). The Canadian government-financed health system is a public, single payer health care system that is funded partially by federal government and the rest is funded by provincial taxes such as income taxes, payroll taxes, and sales taxes (Bodenheimer Grumbach, 2008). Federal taxes had accounted for 50% of financing for health care services during the 1970s; however, this had decreased toShow MoreRelatedThe Canadian Health Care System1111 Words   |  5 PagesThe Canadian health care system is often touted as a better health care system compared to the way the United States administers health care since the two neighboring nations appear to be economically and socially similar. Management An Environmental Analysis on the Company NTUC

Question: Case Study on PESTEL Analysis of NTUC FairPrice Co-operative? Answer: 1. Introduction Successful businesses owe their superior performance to their ability to control certain aspects of their internal environment factors. But apart from a companys internal resources, there are certain macro-economic factors governing the external environment of the company that have profound impact on the companys performance. The purpose of this report is to perform an environmental analysis on the company NTUC FairPrice Co-operative, the largest supermarket chain in Singapore. Does The Intricacy of The Topic Intimidate You? Tame Your Fear with Unmatched Assignment Help Services from Professional Writers. 2. Company Background To be Singapores leading world-class retailer with a heart This is the vision of FairPrice. The NTUC FairPrice Co-Operative is a co-operative of the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC). The firm founded in 1973, has the most market share and has a strong presence across various grocery channels; FairPrice and FairPrice finest for supermarkets, FairPrice Xtra for hypermarkets and FairPrice Xpress and Cheers for convenient stores. The USP of the store is the offer of a fair price for all its products, the primary targets being the low and middle income consumers. They deal with a wider range of products including bakery, alcoholic beverages, dairy, snacks, drinks, sea foods, deli, frozen foods, pharmacy, meat and poultry, general merchandise, grocery and so on. The company also has internet retailing facility for the convenience of their consumers. 3. Country Background Singapore was founded in 1819 as a British trading colony. In 1965 the country became independent after separating from the two years association with the Malaysian Federation. Singapore then went on to become one of the worlds leading countries with strong international ties and trades and per capita GDP on par with the western countries. Singapores economy is the second freest in the world according to the 2014 economy index. Minimum tolerance for corruption, strong judicial laws, and competitive financial sectors has ensured continual economic growth and development in the country. Singapores food and retail industry is a significant component of the countrys growing economy. The country has several locally established industries while playing host to a number of international enterprises as well. The world-class infrastructure, strong governance, high quality standards, location, ease of business and skilled work force are all factors that could Singapore the next food hub of the world. 4. External Environment Analysis on the company In the proper functioning of a company, and in situations like new product launch ideas and new ventures, apart from analysing the internal factors or the micro-economic factors such as resources, finance, and human capital, leadership, culture inside a company and the structure of a company, a company is required to analyse the macro-economic factors that will influence their strategic planning. The PESTEL analysis is the most common tool employed for assessing these factors (Yksel, 2012). Through PESTEL analysis, this report attempts to identify the NTUC FairPrices business environment and help them in adapting to the actualities of their business environment. The advantage of this analysis is that it helps minimize the threats and maximize profit. The six categorized factors according to PESTEL analysis are are described below. The first letter of each word is combined to form the word PESTEL. PESTEL Analysis 4.1 Political Factors Political factors concerns with the degree of government interference in a countrys economy. These specifically include tax policy, tariffs, trade restrictions, labour law, and political stability (virblis Zinkevi ite, 2008). Singapore is a country world renowned for its high-quality governance holding one of Asias most efficient governments. The political conditions in the country are favourable to NTUC FairPrice and in planning a new venture, the political risk on investments is very low. 4.2 Economic Factors Economic factors include economic growth of the country the business is based in, inflation rates, interest and exchange rates and have major impact in the operation of any business. Interest rates impact a firms capital cost and directly impacts the growth and expansion of the company. And exchange rates affect the export and import of a company. It is one of worlds leading economies and has a GDP per capita of around 45,000 USD (approximate value) and GNI per capita of around 40,000 USD (approx.). Thus, an average citizen in Singapore has higher average income and standard of living when compared to the rest of the world. Singapore is a highly trade dependent economy. The country imports ninety percent of its food. And it was one of the economies in Asia to have strongest recovery from the global economic crisis of 2008 but it is not the case for rest of Asia and other countries the country deals with. This has an impact on the economy growth of the country, with the export rate coming down. The labour market in Singapore rose to a new high in the recent years owing to its strong recovery from the crisis, with an unemployment rate of only two percent throughout 2014. Singapore is the seventh most motivated labour force in the world and has the fifth most skilled work force in Asia (Pagell Krause, 2004). 4.3 Social Factors Social factors affecting the external environment of a company are population growth, age distribution, career and income distribution, health and cultural aspects. Singapore is a country with a population of only about 5.47 million (as of June 2014). One of the growing concerns about the country is its declining population growth since the birth rate has declined drastically over the last decade. But these schemes still havent helped in increasing the population of the country. The literacy rate in Singapore is very high around 92.5% which indicates that most Singapore residents have higher or secondary education. Singapore is the worlds largest social media market according to a recent market survey. With the advent of technology, evolution of smart phones and availability of twenty four hour internet services social media market is used by people for a variety of purposes. This opens an opportunity for business to create brand awareness and market their products via the social media for better reach to the people. Several companies in Singapore have taken to social media marketing through Facebook and Twitter. With regard to NTUC FairPrice, the social factors can have both positive and slightly negative impact. Also the shift towards healthier lifestyle may influence people to avoid frozen foods, and other unhealthy products. But overall the companys prospects arent too affected by the social factors. 4.4 Technological Factors The technological factors include aspects such as automation, research and development, and rate of technological advancement of a country. The government of Singapore has invested heavily on the RD activities in the country and there are lot of highly trained scientific personnel operating in the country (Koberg, Detienne Heppard, 2003). The nations iN2015 plan was devised by the government to help the country realise the potential of information and communication technology. 4.5 Environmental Factors Environmental factors include climatic changes, weather, natural disasters and epidemics. The countrys local climate has an influence on the type of food people prefer. In case of natural disasters, in the country or in any of the countries the company has trade relations, will affect the export and import. For example after the earthquake and Tsunami in Japan, the export of sea food and other produces from the country had stopped until the nation recovered from the damage. This may cause people to stay clear of Japanese food fearing risk to health affecting the Japanese food market (Yuksel and Dagdeviran, 2007). Similarly with the outbreak of a particular disease caused by food products, people tend to fear and stay away from those products. For example, during the bird flu outbreak, the chicken consumption in the world was affected since people steered away from buying chicken. The Government of Singapore has strict rules for their local poultry producers and the importers of poultry. All food products are tested for their high quality and only then sold in the supermarkets since meat, poultry, sea food etc. are all vulnerable food prone to diseases. NTUC FairPrices reputation as one of the retail chains with the highest quality may be beneficial to them at these times because consumers would then look for safe choices. NTUC FairPrices highly reputed pharmacy services also remain unaffected by these factors. 4.6 Legal Factors Legal factors include law and order in the country. The taxes in a country, the consumer law, discrimination law, labour law and other laws in a country affect how a company operates. Singapore is a country with one of the lowest tax rates in Asia. Singapore is a part of ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations), a ten country association. Also, Singapore has been named as the best country to do business in by the World Bank. The easy process of setting up and closing a business, paying of taxes, investors security are the factors that led to the name. 5. Porters five forces Another tool used to analyse the macro-economic factors is the Porters five forces tool which identifies Supplier power, Potential entrants, Industry rivalry, Buyer power and threat of substitutes as the five forces affecting the environment of a business. It provides the company with a view on where the power is in the location the company is planning to move to and also the business potentials. This analysis gives a clear view on how a company can exploit its strengths and improve on weakness to experience continual growth (Daft, Sormunen Parks, 1988). 5.1 Competitor Analysis (Industry rivalry) As far as NTUC FairPrice is concerned, the main competitors include Sheng Shiong Supermarket which also targets low income consumers (their trade mostly done with China) and Dairy Farm International which caters to middle and upper income consumers. Both these companies trail behind NTUC FairPrice in market share. But in order to stay ahead of competition at all times, NTUC Fairprice must constantly improvise on their services and introduce new services. 5.2 Buyer Power Options for purchasing food are galore in Singapore. As previously mentioned, Singapore is country that imports ninety percent of its food requirements. Therefore the country has numerous supermarkets and convenience stores all over the country. NTUC needs to be careful about this in planning new ventures. 5.3 Supplier Power Considering the numerous number of suppliers ready to supply items in Singapore, the power of suppliers is significantly lower. And NTUC FairPrice is not dependent on a single supplier for their business. For any business it is necessary that the firm maintain good relationship with the suppliers but if necessary it is possible for NTUC to acquire products of equal quality from other suppliers. 5.4 Potential Entrants Since Singapore is an easy country to start business in new companies come up every day. The highly pro-business environment makes potential entry of new businesses a valuable threat. But according to reports, the availability of high quality sales and marketing people is lower in the food and retail industry. And since the quality of products expected in this industry is very high, established businesses such as NTUC FairPrice hold a fair amount of competitive advantage over potential entrants. 5.5 Threat of substitutes Threat of substitutes is quite high in this industry as far as Singapore is concerned. Several stores in Singapore offer the same products offered in NTUC FairPrice. Competitors like Cold Storage, Dairy farm international are valuable substitutes. In order to keep ahead of these threats NTUS FairPrice must offer unique products with lesser substitutes to maintain the customer base. Table 1: PESTEL Analysis of NTUC FairPrice Political Singapore is ranked as one of the least corrupt nations in Asia and is a world-leader in making consistent political policies and renowned for political stability. Therefore, the political risks on investments are very low for NTUC FairPrices existing as well as new outlets. Economical Singapore is one of those leading economies in the world with stability and growth. The unemployment rate is very low in the country and the average income higher than most countries. In addition high exchange rates all work in favour of NTUC FairPrices business ventures. Social The declining population growth in Singapore puts pressure on the labour market. But the literacy rates are high in the country and with their flexible immigration policy Singapore has the highest number of foreign workers working in their country. This could affect NTUC significantly. Technological The government of Singapore has invested heavily on the RD activities in the country and there are lot of highly trained scientific personnel operating in the country (Koberg, Detienne Heppard, 2003). Highly developed technological society in Singapore makes marketing possibilities easy for NTUC FairPrice in their business growth. Environmental Environmental factors are out of human beings control. The occurrence of a natural calamity in Singapore or elsewhere in the world, outbreak of an epidemic concerning meat, poultry and fishes which are vulnerable can affect NTUCs food industry since Singapore imports around ninety percent of its food. The environmental factors have an huge impact on their business. Legal Singapore is a country with one of the lowest tax rates in Asia. Also Singapores free trade agreement with countries all over the world has led to decrease in investment barriers. Singapore has been named as the best country to do business in by the World Bank. Therefore, the legal factors are also in favour of NTUCs business ventures.
